Кароліна Бундаш

Karolina Bundash (b. 1995, Zakarpattia, Ukraine) is a Ukrainian contemporary artist working primarily with acrylics, oils, and watercolours. She lives and works in Lviv, Ukraine.

Her artistic journey began in 2015 while studying medicine at Vinnytsia National Medical University. Since 2019, she has dedicated herself to art professionally, developing a practice that combines careful observation, figurative painting, and symbolic imagery.

Her background in medicine and the study of human anatomy has influenced the way she understands and represents form. An attention to detail, precision, and the physical qualities of objects remains central to her work. She is particularly interested in the relationship between realistic representation and the emotional or symbolic meanings that familiar images can acquire.

Over time, her practice has evolved from botanical illustration and portraiture towards more personal, psychologically layered compositions. Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 marked an important shift in her artistic direction, bringing questions of vulnerability, memory, uncertainty, and the search for safety into sharper focus.

At the centre of Bundash’s artistic practice is an exploration of human vulnerability, emotional memory, and the relationship between personal experience and the spaces we inhabit. Her paintings often draw on ordinary domestic objects, familiar interiors, textiles, and fragments of childhood imagery. Through unexpected combinations, subtle visual contradictions, and elements of surrealism, she transforms these recognisable subjects into reflections on internal conflicts and emotional states.

Her work moves between carefully observed reality and imagined situations, finding meaning in seemingly insignificant details. Rather than offering a single interpretation, Bundash creates images that invite viewers to recognise something of their own experiences within them.
